Win An Amish Friendship Bread Kit!

Greetings!

Continuing on the recipe theme this week, I'm inviting readers of this blog to enter a contest to win an Amish Friendship Bread kit.

I included a recipe for the bread in my novella, One Child, one of the three novellas in An Amish Christmas. My neighbor--who's become a good friend--tested it along with me. We think it's a thoughtful gift idea for the holidays or any season, really, since you could make variations of the kit (or the bread) and package it differently. Any time is a good time to give a friend a gift.

The bread uses a "starter" similar to that of sourdough bread but it ends up tasting sweeter so don't worry! The starter is kept in a sealed container and each day you add another ingredient until the mixture is ready to be baked. The reason why it's called friendship bread is that you save some of the starter and give it to a friend who can then repeat the process with another friend. And so on and so on ...

Whether you win or not, there's no need to buy one of the pricey kits I saw advertised on the Internet. Twenty-six dollars plus shipping? No way! After all, it's the thought that counts. Simply buy a glass, pottery, or plastic container with a lid that closes securely. It should hold 32 ounces. Include the starter and a wooden spoon because you shouldn't stir the mixture with a metal one. Tie a copy of the recipe and the spoon to the container. If you want, you could include not just the starter but all of the ingredients, maybe add a loaf pan for baking, and some special teas. Place them in a pretty basket, and wrap it all up in that clear cellophane wrapping paper.

Friendships are formed during the Two Days of Christmas that my couples--one Amish, one Englisch --spend together in One Child. I hope that you'll enter the contest and look for An Amish Christmas when it's released to read more about Sarah and David and Kate and Jason--and a surprise visitor! The contest winner will be chosen by random selection by -- drum roll, please -- my friend next door, of course! I'll post the name of the winner on March 20.

Wishing you many warm friendships!

Barbara

What a wonderful idea this was. I've done it in the past with hot cocoa mix I made and gave out at Christmas as gifts and everyone loved them. I am anxiously awaiting the new Amish novels to be out. I enjoy these Amish news articles very much. God bless you and keep the stories coming. Sincerely, Dee Ackerman, Brick, NJ

We took that photo at my friend's house after we had dinner and she wondered about whether she should remove some of the titles in the background. I said I had some similar books at home...Weight Watcher's Cookbook, Carb this and that sort of books! Can't wait to share your comment with her!

I have done several gifts of this nature, they are so much fun to think up new ideas. Most folks here in Texas do not know alot about the Amish. I think I might use this idea next Christmas and write up a note about how Amish pass on the starter. I am loving this website.

    Barbara,
My father was in the bread business for 45 years in NJ and FL and he always said being around it was always a way to affirm life and close associations. I got to work with him and understood his 'bread of life' meaning. Thanks for the great idea and chance to win this recipe.

It was called a Friendship "chain" cake, starting with sugar, peaches and a starter(a friend gives you). Leave on counter for 10 days and stir once a day. Then add sugar and pineapple...10 days, stir 1x. Add cherries & fruit cocktail..10 days, stir 1x, drain & divide into containers for friends.
Proceed with yellow cake mix, vanilla pudding, oil, eggs, nuts, add that fruit mixture. Bake in bundt. So much ferment it tastes like rum. Best cake I ever had. Now where to get that starter?? I have detailed recipe if you would like, Martha.

My head is spinning from all the starters for the bread & cake out there. I did find the recipe I use; cake takes 60-days on the counter {including the 30 days to make the fruit (not yeast)starter}.
