Happy Memorial Day!
Beth and I did a switcheroo for our days--she'll be blogging on Wednesday, and I have the privilege of blogging on Memorial Day. I want to salute the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for our safety and our freedom. Thank you for your service and sacrifice!
We had an interesting and pleasant weekend here at the Fuller's. The excitement started on Saturday, when some of our pigs broke out of their pen. My husband had moved them to the other side of the barn while he cleaned out their usual abode, and apparently some of them didn't like the accomodations and felt the need to be free. Below is a picture of our ham on the lam by in our backyard.

Fortunately between my husband, son, and I we got the fugitives back where they belonged. We've been raising pigs for about six years and this is only the second time they've broken out, so our track record is pretty good.
Today me, my husband, and our youngest daughter Zoie went to Middlefield to visit the flea market and pick up some jelly. An Amish family named Hostetler makes the most delicious jelly, and Zoie loves to go to the flea market--there are all sorts of things there to look at and to buy. Today was a huge day--at least 5,000 people were there. Normally it isn't that crowded, but today is a holiday and the weather was perfect. Here are a couple of photos--there were plenty Amish there, but out of respect for their beliefs I try not to get them in the pictures. You'll see one man here, but just his profile.
This flea market is huge! The picture doesn' t do it justice.
Lots and lots of flowers for sale!
Beautiful sky above a typical Amish house in Middlefield. Looks like they're just about ready to do some planting.
I hope all of you had a wonderful and safe holiday weekend!
'Til next time,
Kathleen

HI KATHLEEN, SO, YOUR RAISING PIGS?
MY LATE HUSBAND AND I RAISED A FEW, B/4.
ALSO, MY LATE IN-LAWS AND WE HAD OOUR SHARE OF ROUNDING THEM UP AND GETTING THEM BACK IN THEIR PENS. I'LL NEVER FORGET THE TIME WHEN I AND MY HUSBAND HAD JUST GOTTEN MARRIED AND HAD NOT BEEN WED TOO LONG AND MY IN-LAWS PIGS GOT OUT, I WAS ON THE FARM ALONE AND NEVER HAVING BEEN RAISED ON A FARM, I DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO GET THEM BACK IN, SO, I WENT TO A NEIGHBOR AND THEY HELPED ME GET THEM ROUNDED UP AND BACK IN THE PEN, WELL, LOW AND BEHOLD IF WHEN I TURNED MY BACK, THEY WERE OUT AGAIN!!!! THIS TIME I KIND A LEARNED FROM THE NEIGHBORS HOW TO GET THE CORRELLED AND BACK IN THEIR PEN. I DID IT TOO, BY MYSELF...I'M NOT SURE HOW MANY THERE WWERE NOW, BUT, IT WAS BETWEEN 4-6...
YOUR PICTURES OF THE FLEA MARKET ARE AWESOME. A FEW WEEKS AGO, MYSELF AND MY BROTHER WENT OVER TO OUR NEIGHBORING TOWN OF WHERE THERE ARE AMISH AND THERE WERE A LOT OF HORSE AND BUGGIES OUT AND ABOUT THAT DAY. I'M NOT SURE IF THEY HAVE OR IF THEY ATTEND MANY FLEA MARKETS FROM AROUND HERE OR NOT, BUT, I DO KNOW THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF AMISH BUT IT IS A SMALL COMMUNITY. WE HAVE A GROUP OF AMISH THAT COME TO OUR NURSING HOME ONCE A MONTH AND I'M NOT SURE IF THEY JUST PLAY MUSIC OR IF THEY SING TOO, BUT, I PLAN ON GOING IN THIS NEXT TIME THEY ARE HERE SINCE I HOPEFULLY WON'T BE BUSY ON THE NIGHT THEY COME IN THIS NEXT TIME.
I HOPE EVERYONE HAS HAD A GREAT AND SAFE MEMORIAL WEEKEND.

Kathleen, what a lovely farm you have! You certainly had some excitement for the holiday with having to round up the pigs. Out here in the woods where we live there are actually wild hogs! One day around noon as I left our place and headed down Sandy Creek Road, a herd of wild pigs ran right across the road in front of me! It happened so fast and I was trying to swerve to miss them, that I didn't get a chance to count them all. There was at least one large sow, then a number of "teenage" size hogs, and then some little piglets! The flea market sounds like it was a lot of fun, too, but 5000 people is a huge crowd. After living out here in the woods for 13 years, it is very hard to go into the big city of Houston any more, as the traffic and crowds are overwhelming. It's good that you are still young enough to enjoy the outings with your family!

Kathy, that must have been a riot having to round up runaway pigs. You've got to put that in a book someday!
I have two little dogs I rescued from the Humane Society that have gotten out of the yard. Thank goodness the teen next door was able to round up the Italian greyhound the one time he slipped out through a hole in the fence. I'd never have caught him myself. You should see how fast he can run!

Rose- that's interesting about the Amish visiting a nursing home. If you get a chance to see them there, let us know how it went.
Cathey: Wow, that's crazy about the wild boars! I'd probably freak out. We have coyotes around here and of course deer. The deer will walk right out in front of your car, the coyotes just stay in the woods, or in some cases, venture in the yard. We have the area around our house well lit just in case. I thought 5,000 was way too many people, too. We ended up not looking at everything because of the crowds. It's true, once you get used to having space and being a bit isolated, its hard to be around huge amounts of people.
Barbara- Remind me to tell you about the time I fell in the pigpen...
