Amish church services
I was reading one of my favorite blogs the other day, Amish America, and came across this picture in one of the entries.

I have to say, I've never seen a buggy this big. Turns out this is how the Amish transport their church benches from house to house for their services. The Amish don't meet in a church building, they host services in their homes, with each family in the church district taking a turn. Services are usually held every other Sunday, and congregants gather in the basement (especially if the weather is cold) or in a large barn. After the three hour service there is a meal, often potlluck, and then later in the evening some of the young people might gather for a singin' or a frolic.
For more great pictures and stories about Amish settlements all over the country, I encourage you to visit Amish America. It's a great source of information about the Amish.
'Til next time,
Kathleen

Kathleen, I was just thinking that today was Wednesday and there would be some news from you today, and I went online and there it was! This is very interesting about the large buggy used to haul the benches for the church services from house to house. It certainly makes sense! Thanks for the info about the Amish site. I'll check it out! Have a great week!

I knew Amish meet every other Sunday for services but wasn't quite sure how they got all the benches there. I had thought that each family had there own benches and just stored them , guess I was wrong on that department.

I loved the photo of the buggy! I never thought of the problem of getting the benches from house to house. I wonder how many horses pull that buggy. The Amish own such gorgeous healthy animals!! Keep this information coming. I thought I knew a fair amount about the Amish until I read this article.

Hello! I've been getting emails from Amish America form about three years now. He took a short break from emails because he is writing a book and has been real busy but I did start receiving the emails again!
Blessings,

I would think the buggy with the benches would be extremely heavy. How many horses does it take to pull it?
I knew they carted the benches to the homes, but just never thought about the buggy size. Interesting. I enjoy receiving your Amish news.

Patti- I just tried the link I gave (click on Amish America) and it worked for me. If it doesn't work for you, try www.amishamerica.typepad.com.
Regarding horsepower to pull the wagon--I have no idea how many horses it would take. That's a really good question. I've never seen one of these big wagons in Middlefield (but that doesn't mean they don't have them). I'll see if I can find out.

Two horses can easily pull it. Most times church services are held in the livingroom and kitchen of the house.
One of the oldest Old Order Amish settlements use meeting houses instead of taking turns to have church in their homes.
