Writing From the Heart

Thank you, Amy, for such a great review of Plain Promise.  I can't wait for that one to release and to hear what readers think!

I'm currently working on book #4 in the Daughters of the Promise series, Plain Paradise.  A fitting name, no?  I'm writing about a subject close to my heart.  Adoption.  I was adopted when I was two weeks old and was blessed with wonderful parents.  While my story in no way parallels my character's story, we have one thing in common.  I met my birth mother when I was 25.  We kept in touch for a while, but we each had our own families and eventually drifted apart.  Looking back, I'm not sure how it happened, but our meeting did seem to fill a void for both of us.

But what happens when an Old Order Amish girl, 17-years-old, finds out that she is adopted?  When her Englisch birth mother comes calling, Linda is in her rumschpringe (running around period that begins when an Amish youth turns 16) and has the freedom to venture out into the Englisch world, spend time with her birth mother, and ultimately decide whether to leave the only life she's ever known.  Of course, there is a romance going on as well.  I like happy endings, and while that's a given when you're writing romance, this book is a little different for me.  The romance is secondary, and there is a strong storyline between Linda's birth mother and the mother who raised her.  Now, if you're starting to think this might be too serious...not to worry!  There is Grandpa Jonas to keep everyone on their toes.

Several people have asked me how the book is going to end.  Well, I don't know.  I never know.  God guides the story and helps me to show the spiritual growth of at least one of my characters.  If I get off-track, he gently nudges me back onto the right path.  And I never know who might show up on the scene.  Sometimes, a character just jumps into my head and demands to be written in.

I dedicated book #2, Plain Pursuit, to my mother - my 'real' mother, the one who raised me from the time I was 2-weeks-old.  But as I write this book, I can't help but wonder if my birth mother might be scanning the Christian fiction section at the bookstore and see that I am writing these books that glorify Him, and that she might be proud.  Last time I saw her, almost 20 years ago, I wasn't in such a good place in my life.  Somehow, I want her to know that I turned out okay.

Wow.  Heavy stuff for a Monday morning!  Just wanted to share!  Hope you all have a great week!

Hugs, Beth

I think I would want to know about my birth mother if I had been adopted. Sometimes people are just not cut out to be a parent and I am so glad you got in a good Christian home that loved you.

Beth, I hope your "real" parents who adopted you and raised you read this web site and see your nice tribute to them. Perhaps your birth mother will see your books and check out the web site, too. It would be good for her to see that you are doing the Lord's work with your inspring writing. Can't wait for the books to come out!
