Let's Eat!

It's in the 90s here in Florida but I get to cool off by pretending to be in the midst of winter in Paradise, Pennsylvania, as  I write scenes for my new Amish book. .

Tonight I was thinking that I haven't yet chosen a recipe for the book. In One Child, my novella in An Amish Christmas, (Thomas Nelson, due in stores any day now), I used a recipe for Friendship bread. In When Winter Comes, in An Amish Gathering (Thomas Nelson, due out in December), I used a recipe for Chicken and Corn soup (yum!).

Now I need a recipe for the first of a three book Amish series for Abingdon Press (the first is due out Fall, 2010). The book begins in winter, then goes through spring and summer. I posted a recipe for Amish Pretzels on this site sometime back and I could use that...

But I think it'll be more fun to get you, dear readers, to send in a suggestion for an Amish recipe you love. Don't post the recipe  -- just tell me its name, some of its ingredients, and where you got it. Did you first eat it or get the recipe on a visit to an Amish community? Where?

If you win the contest, I'll include the recipe in the book and give you credit in the book.  Enter by midnight Thursday, Sept. 3.

Jane Squires is the winner of last week's contest. She'll get an autographed copy of An Amish Christmas. I liked what Jane wrote. I think you'll agree: it's easy to be grateful when things are going well but a whole different thing when they're not. And Jane also wrote that she's grateful for her friend who is helping her through rough times. Jane, I've sent you an e-mail asking for your snail mail address.

'Til next week!

Barbara

    Hi Barbara,

Just want you to know how much I enjoy all the Amish stories you each write.

I have a great Amish recipe from the Bird In Hand Family Restaurant Cookbook - Recipes & Recollections from Grandma Smucker's Kitchen.

The recipe is for Stuffed Cabbage Casserole. The recipe has ground beef (I use ground turkey), cabbage, rice and tomato soup.

It's a wonderful recipe for a large crowd, pot luck or just leftovers.

My husband and I travel to Bird In Hand twice a year, stay at the Bird In Hand Family Inn and always eat their wonderful Amish food in the restaurant.

If you choose this recipe, I'd love to share it with you and your readers.

      Sandy,

The recipe sounds so good and relatively simple to make.

      Good luck with the contest.

Part of the reason I read Amish fiction is because I don't have a chance to actually go to any Amish communities. I don't think there are any in FL. I know the recipe you choose for your book will be great!

      Hi Kimberly,

Thanks for responding. There is an Amish community in Florida and I feature it in one of my books that's coming out soon. I'll give everyone a head's up when it's due out.

    Hi Barbara,

Gosh, it sure would be nice to be a winner on this, But, unfortunately, I don't have any Amish Recipes that I have made that I could share. I do have an Amish Cookbook with their recipes in it, but, then this has to be one that I have made and tried as I understand this.

Good Luck to who ever submits the recipe that gets featured. That is truly another Honor to be featured as the one who gave the recipe..

    Hi Rose,

I'm hoping to get some good recipes I haven't used so far. When I go to Lancaster soon I'll pick some more from my Old Order Amish friend there.

I have several favorites that I have collected from Lancaster County, PA and Homes County, OH. To pick one - I would say Frozen Fruit Slush. I got this one in Berlin, Ohio. It is so good and refreshing and can be used with a breakfast buffet (which they do at the Carlisle Inn there in Sugar Creek)as a dessert or just a snack. It has frozen orange juice, frozen lemonade, crushed pineapple, mashed bananas and peaches and it is mixed with water and sugar and partially frozen. It can be thawed some for serving. It is out of this world! I found the recipe in a little "Amish Kitchen Cooking" booklet that is sold at the homes of those Amish ladies who do "tour" dinners for those who want to have a dinner in an Amish home as part of the tour. That was a wonderful experience.

I know Coke does great things to ham!

Cola also does wonders for pot roast and veggies in the slow cooker.
