Full Moons and Harvest Moons and Recipes

It wasn't a harvest moon last Saturday (that was in October) but the moon was so full and gorgeous on Halloween night. As Amy said last weekend, the Amish don't celebrate this holiday of kids -- and some adults -- dressing up in costume and parading from home to home for trick or treating.

I'm not a big fan of Halloween but I had to take the costume I promised to make for a three year old grandson to him. Afterward, I sat with friends in their driveway, watching them hand out candy. The air was finally cool here in Florida so it was so nice to enjoy the outdoors. Gazing at the beautiful moon that night, I thought about the harvest moon and the upcoming weddings that take place in Amish communities in the fall. You see, harvest time is so important, weddings must wait until the crops are in. There are still some weddings in December but not many as the weather becomes so inclement in many Amish communities around the country.

Fall is my second favorite season -- spring is my favorite, maybe because I was born in April -- and I've really looked forward to it since moving to Florida many years ago. I still haven't been able to turn off the air conditioning not just because of the record heat but also because of high pollen but maybe soon...

I'm looking forward to one of my research trips this weekend and some wonderful Amish food. I need several more recipes for my first book in the Abingdon Press series and of course I'll have to personally sample them, then cook them and sample them again for my readers. It's hard work but somebody's got to do it. Nothing's too good for you, dear readers!  :  )

I'll run a contest in my next blog for AmishHearts readers to choose the recipe(s) for the books. In the meantime, I hope you'll let me know if you have any favorite Amish recipes or memories from visits to Amish communities around the country.

Have a great weekend!

Blessings,

Barbara

I am not a huge fan of Halloween either. When my son was younger what we did was he picked whatever he was going to dress up as and we would then pray for people. For example if he dressed up as Popeye we would pray for all those people who like to watch Popeye. We didn't do gory or spooky stuff though.

My favorite Amish recipe is probably chicken pot pie and then chicken corn soup. I love both!

      What a great idea, Wendy!

Mmm...chicken pot pie and chicken corn soup. Two of my favorites this time of year. Thanks for the suggestions!
