Good News, Bad News...

First, the good news...

This past Saturday, I was the featured author at a gala that's been planned for months, benefiting the Schulenburg Literary Club.  There were about 200 people in attendance, and the house was too fabulous to describe.  It was a formal event, $100 per couple, gourmet food, violin player...the works.  Just amazing.  My best friend of 31 years--Renee'-- came in town to attend the event with me and my husband, Patrick, and to help me with the book signing.  We sold over 60 books, and it was an amazing evening.

This is me and Renee' at my house before the event.  We had so much fun trying on clothes, getting our hair done, etc...

Renee' and I have been best friends since I was 16.  She is my kindred spirit, my family.  We've been through  births of children, loss of our parents, and everything in between.  She's read the worst of the worst manuscripts over the past 20+ years, and she reads behind me to this date on each project.  Our friendship is a cherished gift from God.

And it was all about the shoes!  I bought these shoes while I was shopping with my agent, Mary Sue, in Denver.  I splurged, but we fell in love with these shoes!
Me and Hubby at the gala.  These type of events don't come along often, and what a blast we had!
  Signing books at the event.

The bad news...

Following a wonderful night at the gala, we were awakened by a phone call at 6 a.m. the next morning.  It was the call that every mother dreads, and it was about Renee's 24-year-old son.  "Your son has been in an accident."  I remember when Brian was born, just a tiny little thing with his entire life ahead of him.  His wife is pregnant and in the hospital with premature labor, so we've all been praying that she will be able to hold onto the little one for a while longer.

Brian was changing a tire early Sunday morning with help from two men from AAA.  They were hit by a car.  We're waiting to find out if it was a drunk driver or someone who fell asleep.  One man was killed at the scene, and Brian and the other man were rushed to the hospital.  It was a long 2-hour drive yesterday morning from my house in the country to the hospital in Houston.  Brian is in critical condition, and my heart is breaking.

Please pray for Brian, Renee', Brian's wife, and all involved.  Many of you know my story about my own son, and I believe in the power of prayer with all my heart.

May you all have a blessed Thanksgiving.

    The gala sounds delightful.

I'm so, so sorry to hear about Brian. And I know his wife must be frantic, not being able to be there. Lifting them up in prayer right now.

What a day of emotional highs and lows. So glad you and your friend had such a wonderful time before she had to hear such bad news about her son. I'm glad you were there with her and I will "be there" with all of you two with prayer.

    Love,

    Barbara
