A New Home for Hilda

A winner has been picked for Hilda, the Amish doll who has been sitting on my desk as I work on my Amish stories. Lynn Hughes, you are the winner. Please send me a comment with your address. Don't worry -- I won't publish the comment...

I bought the doll for the contest as a way to thank the readers of AmishHearts because so many of you have been so wonderful about writing to tell Beth, Kathy, and me how much you enjoyed reading An Amish Christmas. So much positive response has been generated. The three of us feel very grateful for your response! We hope you'll continue to buy the book for yourselves and for your friends and family.

Now it's time for An Amish Gathering! The book came out this week and tonight, when I returned home from the grocery store I found my box of "Arthur copies" on the front porch. "Arthur copies" is what one of my children called author copies many years ago...

So, I'm hereby announcing another contest. The Amish have been called the world's best visitors. They love to get together at various gatherings and it's those gatherings Beth, Kathy, and I have written about in the book. So, for this week's contest, tell me a little about your favorite gathering. I'll announce the winner next week!

'Til then,

Blessings,

Barbara

My favorite gathering is any time I get together with my family. It doesn't even need to be for a holiday. It's always a special time to gather with the ones you love.

    Thank you for the giveaway!

The times I remember best is when my brother-in-law played Santa Claus. He was such a 'ham' with his comments to the kids, which made it so fun, as he knew things specific to them. Then, of course, he wanted his wife to sit on 'Santa's' lap. What a hoot. Never saw that side of my brother-in-law till then.

I so thoroughly enjoyed An Amish Christmas, as I've always wanted to know how they celebrate Christmas---and I love how they do it. On top of that, I LOVED how you wove the three stories together. So beautifully done. It's a book I gladly recommend.

My favorite gathering was as a child or teen when we went to Grandma and Grandpa's house. The aunts, uncles and cousins would gather. Her homemade noodles (the size of matchsticks), homemade white bread and her white two layer cake with pink frosting couldn't be beat!

For all of my adult life I have gathered with my family on Christmas Eve. When we moved to Colorado nineteen years ago, my husband promised he would take me "home" for Christmas as long as our parents were alive. So each year I packed up the packages, making sure to hide Santa's gifts so our two children couldn't see them in the back of the pickup. Even though my parents were exhausted from celebrating with my five siblings and their families, each of those Christmas mornings they would rise early, grab a cup of coffee and ooh and aah as my children opened their gifts. Even as my children grew to adulhood, Mom and Dad enjoyed sharing Christmas morning with the four of us. This Christmas will be bittersweet. My husband's mother and my mother both died last year. We won't be traveling home to Iowa this Christmas season. Instead we will be staying in Colorado, beginning new traditions with our son and daughter and their significant others. I'm sure I will shed a few tears on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. But I have wonderful memories to draw on, and those memories will bring smiles to my face. Wish you a blessed Christmas! ~Candy Smith

I always love getting together with our families for the holidays. We live several hours away from our parents, and even though holidays mean us juggling several family dinners, we enjoy visiting with everyone. We play group board games or go to the movies in a big group. It's lots of fun!

Anytime I can get together with my two sisters has got to be my favorite gathering! We all live about 1,000 miles apart, so we don't get together very often--certainly not often enough! But when we do, we laugh until our sides ache! Everything seems funny to us! My face has literally hurt, from laughing so much, after a visit with them. Such special times!

This sounds very strange but one of my favorite gatherings takes place on Mon. evening at Tim Hortons. Myself and my daughter's two best friends' mothers started meeting for coffee when our daughters went off to university a year and half ago. We call it our group therapy time. All the girls are only children and best friends but are now all at different unversities leaving moms feeling somewhat worried and rather lonely. So we wear tshirts saying Group Therapy and sit and discuss our happy times and our current causes of concern.
Another favourite gathering is our yearly Christmas gathering(actually next weekend), with my brother's family- he has 5 grown children, grandchildren and now 2 great grandchildren. We are always included,as they know our family circle is rather small, with only the three of us- and now 2! What a blessed event we have.

Contrags on the new book. Contrags to the doll winner, what a wonderful gift. We have a family reunion on my father's side every year, started a few years back and most of our parents have died, but we older children have started getting the younger ones together. What fun we have telling old stories. In the past couple of years we started a Christmas family gathering. This has turned out great also. What fun we have. We are hoping the younger of the family members will continue with this.
    Blessings.

My favorite celebration of course is Christmas. We start by going to the candlelight service at church on Christmas Eve. This includes my family, my parents and my sisters family. We have now grown to 13 in all. After church we go to my parents house for food, fellowship and laughter. My parents then come to my house first on Christmas morning to watch us open presents, then to my sisters to open presents and then we all gather back at their house by 11 am to exchange with our families. We then have Christmas dinner at my house and then game night. And it doesn't stop there. The day after Christmas I have everyone back at my house for leftovers and tails of our day after Christmas shopping. I am very close to my family but at this time of year it is even better. The best part is when I see my parents come watch the kids open presents but they really aren't kids anymore. My boys are 21 and 24 and my sisters kids are 26 and 29 with one daughter-in-law and grandbaby this is 9 months old. We share a closeness that I thank God for everyday and especially at Christmas during the season of Christ's birth. We do also share our sadness of those that have passed on before us but we also rejoice that one day we will share these special times with them also someday in heaven.

My favorite gathering is Mother's Day. I will never forget the one my two daughters took me estate saling/bargain hunting/antigue shopping. We also went to a fast food place and acted like a bunch of silly girls. I am almost 60 and this was only a couple of years ago.
At Mother's Day it is the one day my girls make me feel appreciated and special. They do it other times but not like going yard saling and looking for bargains.

We didn't have many family gatherings.. About the only thing I can remember for anything such as a gathering would be going to my grandmother's house for Christmas dinner..We also waited until later on Christmas morning to open our gifts all together as a family.. I/we didn't like to wait, but, we did and it was still really very enjoyable..

The best family gathering was when I was a little girl. Every Christmas we would go to my Aunt's house. She had not only our family but all my other aunts and uncles and cousins. There must have been almost fifty people there. I remember eating in shifts and having a kids table. Now as an adult I have told that aunt that I don't know how she ever did it. But also that she has given me such wonderful memories that I will never forget those times. She said it was a lot of work, but that she also loved it and misses it now that so many of them have passed on and grown up. We have always been close and I'm glad that I had the chance as an adult to tell her how much it meant to me. We have old black and white pictures of those times, some of which I have framed.
