Music to Write By
This month I've been writing, writing, writing! When I first started writing I used to listen to music all the time, and some how I got away from that. So this week I started finding songs that would fit the stories I'm working on. It's a bit of challenge because the Amish don't listen to music other than the hymns they sing in church and at the singin's. I have heard that when they do hear music, they tend to enjoy country-style tunes more than other types, yet occasionally you might hear a booming bass coming from a tricked out buggy who's owner is in the throes of rumspringa.
For the stories I'm writing now, I seem to be gravitating toward Celtic music, particularly Clannad, with a little bit of Riverdance thrown in. But I've also written to the Dave Matthews Band, Jars of Clay, and yes, I'll admit it, the Bee Gees. Though it is kind of hard transporting myself into Amish country while "Stayin' Alive" is blaring through my headphones.
What is your favorite type of music? When do you usually listen to music?
'Till next time,
Kathleen

Pianist Jim Brickman ... any cd, any time, anywhere. I love making mixes of all sorts of music and listening to those while I drive, work in the house or quilt. I also LOVE acappella praise songs. Keeps me centered. Although 4 part harmony that moves be different from their worship services, perhaps it is as Amish-esque as we can get. Maybe it would help hone in on them more. Just a thought.

I work in a counseling center at my church. Right now,I'm listening to Casting Crowns. I also like Travis Cottrell and Michael W. Smith. Those are quite soothing. At home, I often listen to country music while getting ready for work. I doubt that would work well for your Amish settings either

My husband and I both grew up Amish and used to love country music. Our regular drivers knew to have their radios tuned to our favorite station whenever they took us to run errands or go to town.
Funny since we can have music I hardly ever listen to Country anymore, I enjoy Celtic and several other genres. Though usually not while I'm writing. ☺

I listen to classical music in the car when I am driving. When I read I like to listen to music by a local pianist, Mara Mulder. Mara made only two CD's; Christmas music and hymn tunes, both with classical interpretations. Otherwise I listen to harp or cello music, a Brazilian clarinet quartet, Scott Joplin, or a few recordings of a church community orchestra in which I play. When we were rehearsing for "The Music Man," I listened to a professional soundtrack of it, for a couple of weeks. I play march music when I clean house. I like some, tame contemporary Christian music that my children and grandchildren like.

I love any type of gospel music- from country to traditional. Classical music and instrumentals (especially piano and guitar) are also favorites. Some pop music is good too. Can't stand rock- seems as if there are no words- only shouting- but you sure can hear the beat.

I listen more to audio books than music. But I love the Il Divo guys and the Canadian Tenors. If I ever saw them in person I think I would start crying as soon as they start singing.

I listen to country music, in my car, in my school bus that I drive and of course at home. But I would like to mention that if you haven't listened to the CD by Susan Boyle you need to. I listen to that when I am on my computer for a long time. It is amazing to listen to.

I could listen to 'Celtic Thunder' all day. That's the music I cook by... Instrumental music is my choice when reading. I also like to listen classical.
