What's for Dinner?
Hi everyone!
I turned in my edits for A Time to Love, the first of a new series I'm writing for Abingdon Press, and am working on the second book in the series (it's called A Time for Peace). I realized that I don't have a recipe for A Time for Peace and readers like having one or two in the back of Amish books.
I used a recipe for Amish Friendship Bread in One Child, my novella in An Amish Christmas, and a recipe for Chicken and Corn soup in When Winter Comes, my novella in An Amish Gathering. There's a recipe for Amish pretzels in A Time to Love.
Is there something you particularly like to eat when you visit an Amish community? Let me know and I'll try to get a recipe for it from my Old Order Amish friend. If I use your suggestion I'll send you a copy of the first Advanced Reading Copy (ARC) twhen I receive it.
So send me an idea of what recipe to use in A Time to Love by leaving a comment here on this website.
Speaking of food: did you know there's a book by Dr. Seuss in which the characters try to outdo each other by balancing apples on their heads? My daughter, the almost four year old grandson, and I had to try it after reading the book. Apples fell off our heads and rolled all over the floor as we tried to outdo each other, then we washed the apples and cut them up and ate them. Such silly, simple fun!
Have a great weekend!
Barbara

Oh, that is so great!! Another new book to read! When we were in Paradise last year, we had Wedding Mashed Potatoes at one of the Amish restaurants. They were creamy, fluffy and had a great flavor. I found one recipe for them, but it isn't near as delicious as the ones served at Katie's Kitchen. I asked what they called them and was told they were also called Special Mashed Potatoes. They were served with the wonderful crispy baked chicken that I can not replicate either! Maybe, I am just not a good cook. That could be the problem. By the way, your game with the apples is great!!! I am going to tell my friend to try it with her grandchildren who are 3 and 5. Wish I was still teaching- wouldn't the class be in hysterics??

Amish mashed potatoes -- especially when they put browned butter on top --are fabulous.
I don't know the name of the Dr. Seuss book but it was so funny...my daughter actually managed to put a regular book on her head and then balance a little bitty apple on top of that. She called it the Mama and Baby apples.

I had a slice of pecan pie at dinner tonight when I went out with my son and grandkids and it reminded me of shoofly pie. Both are VERY sweet. You can't eat much of them!

Chicken pot pie is great!

I think a great recipe to add in your new book would be for a real Amish recipe for Shoofly Pie. That is a classic and hard to find an authentic recipe used by the Amish. I have never seen one in an Amish novel before either. Good luck!

Hi!
Do the Amish make any particular soups or vegetable dishes for this warmer time of year, or salads? Thanks.

Something for summer would be a great idea...we tend to associate Amish foods with the rich, heavy comfort foods of fall and winter.

I haven't been to an Amish community, but all the food in their books sure sounds good. How about doughnuts, or one of their desserts?

I would love to have a recipe for Red Velvet Cake like they make at the Bird-in-Hand Bakery or Baked Corn that they serve at Bird-in-Hand Restaurant.

I think you should use Shoofly Pie, I just love that name.

I would love to see a recipe for Amish noodles. It's probably a lot of work but it would be fun to try them. They are always sooo good.

I would like to have a recipe for their wonderful cinnamon rolls with icing. Having one (or two) with a great cup of coffee or glass of milk~~Yummy!!
And even if I don't win a copy of your book, I will go buy it when it is released. Looking forward to the series.

They have this wonderful peanut butter spread that we always get when we visit the Amish restaurant. It is wonderful. I don't know the name of it! I think it has marshmallow cream in it! Delicious!

My favorite part of a visit to Amish country is the pie...I think a pie recipe would be great. My mother-in-law told me she just had a slice of a butterscotch pie on a recent visit that was delicious. I would love to see a recipe for that.
