Me, Myself, and My Lawnmower

One of my very favorite things to do is mow my lawn. I know it probably sounds crazy, but I truly love it. Our lawn is pretty big and it takes about two hours to mow with a riding lawn mower. But its not the ride that I enjoy, because I feel the same about using a push mower. When my children were babies and toddlers we had a smaller yard and I would bring out the playpen and swing, put the kids in them, and mow a patch of lawn. Then I'd move the swing and playpen and mow another patch of lawn. I can only imagine what the neighbors thought. I'm sure I'm the only woman who looks out the window at her yard, does touchdown arms and says, "Yes! I get to mow again!"

Why do I enjoy mowing so much? I love the smell of fresh cut grass. If there was a perfume called Eau de Freshly Mowed Lawn I'd not only buy it, I'd wear it every day. My friends with allergies might disown me but that's a risk I'd be willing to take. The scent is a trigger for me--each time I smell the grass I think of spring and summer, of warm, beautiful days with plenty of daylight and lots of fun outside. Since I live in a climate where cold weather and snow occur almost six months out of the year, I treasure the warm weather.

This past Monday I went to Middlefield with my daughters and one of their friends to the flea market. I've been several times before, but this time I didn't see many Amish at the market. It was a sunny, hot day, and while driving around the area (another one of my favorite things to do) I noticed a lot of Amish outside--some working in their yards, a mother and daughter relaxing under the cool shade of a big oak tree, a few young people riding in open buggies, enjoying the day. The Amish don't take nature or the land for granted, and when you visit Amish country one of the things you notice are the pristine lawns and farms. The landscape is simply stunning. If the weather's not too hot I like to roll the windows down so I can smell--you guessed it--fresh cut grass. I think I need to make another trip to Middlefield soon.

What do you like best about the spring and summer seasons?

'Til next time,
Kathleen

What I like most about Summer is when it ends! I hate summer! Living in Texas, it is just too hot down here to live! When I lived up in Ohio, I felt pretty much like you described, Kathleen. But since moving down here...sigh...I just try to "endure" the long hot summers!

I know when I move to Arkansas next month I'm going to be singing a different tune! I'm from there, and I remember how brutal the summers are. I will definitely miss the summers in Ohio. But I think I'd rather have the hot summer than the long winter. I'll let y'all know in a couple months.

Kathleen, i could almost smell the fresh grass as i read your entry. I too like the smell of fresh cut grass and other summer smells. The taste of the first ripe tomato from the garden is another favorite of mine. Thank you for reminding me what I some time don't take time for.

Yes, you're officially crazy. Just kidding! To each his own. I hate to mow the lawn. I tried it years and years ago and hated it. These days, I have a lawn guy and I so appreciate him and he knows it.

Summer is just so horribly hot here in Florida. I love Spring because it's cooler and it's so pretty with everything coming to life. I much prefer it. My favorite things about summer right now are air conditioning, ice cream, and sleeping in and not having to go do my part-time teaching (as much as I love it).

I can attest to the lovely lawns of the Amish as we were in Lancaster this week. Everything is so pristine and clean. Flowers abound with the colors of the rainbow, etc. They do take such pride in their property. It is a real joy to visit there.
