Catching Up
It's the first whole week back from the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) conference and I'm just catching up. Yes, that was my suitcase sitting in a chair in the living room until two days ago...I was just so busy catching back up with my writing and teaching schedule the suitcase was a low priority. Until I couldn't find my favorite sweater I wear to keep from being cold in class. Then I had to unpack to find it.
I opened the back door yesterday and fall air rushed inside. It was so welcome here in always-hot Florida. That afternoon I came home to a note from the pet sitter that said, "Sorry, love bugs snuck in." I thought these bugs visited in late summer so you can imagine I hoped they were gone. I surely want summer to be over even if it brings us a cold winter once again. Last winter set a record for 10 days straight of the coldest weather Florida has had since they started keeping records. Of course that's the time my heater decided to act up and when the service people tell you that they have several elderly clients without heat and can't get to you unless it's an emergency, you just put up with it. I should have just cried uncle and gone to my daughter's or son's house to stay...so the dog sweaters came out and I bought an oil-filled radiator for my bedroom and then I pulled my warm little Chihuahua mix to me like a teddy bear and we slept under a quilt and several blankets. Gino the Italian greyhound disdained that chummy behavior and had his own little cave of fleece blankets at the end of the bed.
So anyway, the weather change is welcome even if the bugs are not. I tell myself that they are fairly innocuous creatures, after all. It's kind of amusing to see two bugs that get so caught up in being ... ahem, romantic ... that they even fly together. (A friend jokes, "They fly United." I know. Bad joke.) The only annoying thing about them is when you walk into a swarm of them -- or when you step out of your car to get the mail and forget to close the door and you get back in to a carful of them...). They ARE a mess when they hit the car on the Interstate. Naturally that happens only after you've just had it washed. Some people have plastic shields on the fronts of their cars to keep the mess off and eliminate any damage to their engines.
I'm finishing up A Time for Peace, the third book in the Quilts of Lancaster County series for Abingdon Press (due out next year). I've been looking through Amish recipes to place in the rear of the book and thought I'd ask your advice. One of them will be Whoopie Pies, I think, since the Bontrager children love them and they're mentioned in the book. But I'd like to use at least one more. Do you have a favorite Amish recipe? If I choose your suggestion and you submit the recipe to me later upon request, I'll send you a copy of A Time to Love, the first book of the Quilts of Lancaster County series for Abingdon Press. Please enter the contest by submitting your recipe idea on www.AmishHearts.com I'll choose a winner on Thursday at midnight and make the announcement in Friday, Oct. 8th's blog.
I had bookmarks made for the ACFW conference. I'll mail you one if you write me at barcameron39@yahoo.com and send me your name and snail mail address. I have bookmarks for A Time to Love (and a list of the series titles on the back) or An Amish Christmas and An Amish Gathering. Mention which you want OR you may have both if you like.
Have a great weekend!

Hi everyone!
All you need to do is suggest a recipe. If I think it'd be good in the book, I'll write you for the recipe if you have it or get it from an Amish friend of mine.
Good luck in the contest to win a copy of A Time to Love!

I'd like to see a recipe for the dressing/stuffing that is often made. It's not just for Thanksgiving or Christmas. Any recipe would be a good choice though.
Always anxious for the next book. Looking forward to this story. Thanks!

The Amish seem to be love peanut butter (thinking of the peanut spread for sandwiches), and I do too. Do they have any special recipes using peanuts or PB?

Hi Kimberly and guide dog Abby!
I actually just used a recipe for Amish peanut butter spread in A Time to Heal, Book 2 in the Quilts of Lancaster County series...hmm. Maybe you and Abby can come up with something the Amish use peanuts for? All this talk of food is making me hungry tonight...

Hi Barbara, I would love to see a recipe for Amish friendship starter and bread. With the holiday season approaching we could all spread some cheer!! Many Blessings!!

Friendship bread is a good idea but that was in my first book, One Child, in An Amish Christmas. Think of another?

I'd like to see a recipe for Amish Baked Oatmeal. I have a recipe for it, but have not actually made it yet. It sounds delish and really easy to make. Something nice and warm on these cool fall mornings. But I guess that doesn't apply to you in Florida though.
I can not wait to start your new series.

I love the Amish (Illinois) that make the Peanut Butter Angel Food Cakes. Do not have the recipe because I prefer to buy one already made. We go to Arthur, IL and thereabouts to purchase the cake and I believe it is the Yoders Buffet/Gift Shop that sells these. That is only place I have been able to find the Peanut Butter Angel Food Cake . They have other flavors but the buffet place is only place I found to buy this peanut butter angel food cake.

Everyone knows you can't have an Amish recipe without Soft pretzels.. or Pretzel Dogs... but there is ONE SECRET Ingrediant you must have.. Brown Sugar..

I have tons of Amish cookbooks and one of my favorite recipes is for Chocolate Chip Cookies. This is truly the best cookie recipe ever and all my coworkers and friends agree !! They gobble them up quickly.

My suggestion for a recipe is for Cheesy Potato Bacon Soup. It is delicious with milk, velveeta cheese, potatos, bacon, etc. Just let me know if u want the whole recipe. It is super delicious with the creamy cheese, onions, etc.

Oh, I have another favorite soup- tasted at Katie's Kitchen. It is Creamy Potato Soup- with celery, onions carrots, mushroom soup and cheese, as well as potatoes. It was super - could have eaten a bigger bowlful. Now I have made 2 suggestions- don't know if that is allowed--if not, just take my first. I do like Amish food.YUMMY
