Amish youth hitchin' up to Facebook

"Some Amish teens are using the popular social network to keep up with friends. But what will their bishops say about using this modern digital gathering place?"

This is from an article written by GIL SMART 06/19/11 for the (Lancaster) Sunday News which is now being picked up by news resources all over the country due to the Associated Press.  http://lancasteronline.com/article/local/408254_Amish-youth-hitchin--up-to-Facebook.html

It is noted in the article that many of the Amish teens using Facebook are in their rumspringa (not yet baptized) period and only "friends" on Facebook with other Amish, so they may not be in fact breaking rules.  However, it is suspected that if the church leaders were aware of this activity, they would speak against it.

I especially loved the last  line of this article:

"These are kids who are being rebellious," she said.  "They're teenagers."

Sounds familiar..... no matter the community.

Not a comment as much as a question. If so many Amish teens are exposed to "modern" things and enjoy them so much, how many of them actually return to the Amish faith? Is the community population growing or staying the same? I would think the teens would choose not to return. Therefore making the community decrees in population. Very interesting article. Also, if these teens grow up and become bishops, what's to keep them from changing the rules or beliefs of the church in much the same way our society has changed in our churches and beliefs?

Wow, this is something else. I never dreamed that the Amish youth would do this, I bet their parents are not too pleased.
