Contest time!

It's here! A contest to win an Advance Reader Copy of  A Time for Peace, third book in the Quilts of Lancaster County series for Abingdon Press!

All you have to do is tell me one way you've worked to achieve peace in your life. Do you meditate? Try to find a little time for yourself before your significant other and/or family get up? Put on headphones to get some "me" time?

Leave your comment on www.AmishHearts.com  And great news: you can increase your chance of winning if you let Facebook readers know about the contest. (If you're not a FB friend of mine, just ask me to "friend" you. Be sure to tell Facebook readers to enter on www.AmishHearts.com

Have a great week. I'm going back now to finish proofs that arrived this week for the first book in my new series. I hope to get permission to post the cover soon.

Blessings,

Barbara

I don't meditate but I do put on the headphones on occasion for some "me" time. I enjoy time in the Bible for "meditation" as well.

I've learned through the years that possessions do not make me happy. Family makes me happy. Spending time with family is a treasure that we take for granted never knowing when that could end. As I've aged, I care less and less about "things" and more about quality time, being kind to others, reaching out to other who need me, or simply saying a kind word when it is needed. We never know what differences we can make to others, unless we try.

The best way I know to achieve peace is to remember I'm not in control -- God is -- and to try to leave the not so peaceful things with Him! Sometimes I'm successful at this, sometimes not so much!

One of the best ways to regain some peace after a stressful day, is to take some tea out at night and sit down and listen and watch my horses munch on some hay. Horses are my "therapy" and help me with so much in my life. My mare most times would rather I scratch her and show her attention then she would be eating the hay! She is quite the lover.

To answer your question about meditation time, as a member of the secular order of Carmel, within the Catholic church, I am called to mental prayer 1/2 hr.a day...besides other prayer, vocal in prayer our Morning and Evening prayers We try to follow Christ praying in desert. If there's no one around to interrupt (Ha) it is very peaceful but many times my own wayward thoughts are the interruptions. The Amish way of life reminds me of the simplicity the Carmelites are called to in their Monasteries and Convents that we only try to be part of in our Lay order. I love your books. Thank you. M.A.

I have two ways to find peace. I can't think of anything more peaceful then having my nose stuck in a good book. That is very relaxing to me. The most important way I find peace in my life is my morning walks. This is my time with God. I talk to Him and I listen to Him. Sometimes the beauty of the morning sunrise brings me to tears. I so enjoy this time!

With the everyday hectic life we live I take 15 minutes each morning before leaving for work just to sit & relax. I have found this has helped tremendously now that I am a grandmother. When my granddaughter is visiting I can just sit & play with her because I have come to understand everything else will wait, because these moments fly by & you need to cherish this time in life.

Oh That's an easy one !! Reading books about the Amish and their way of life. I love all books Amish and they have truly captured the peace by a strong faith. I find that peace also by reading the books you and the other authors write. I also pray a lot and take a lot of deep breaths in life ! I cross stitch also, enjoy my family and do a lot of canning. I find peace in trying to live the simple life and yes I do work every day and have to try and fit all of this in when I can. They always say "where there is a will, there is a way". I have the will and I have found the way. As long as you keep writing I will keep reading and we will all have peace !!

I find peace and me time when I lose myself in the books that I am reading. Sometimes it is so hard to put the book down and return to real life. I usually do my reading in bed just before going to sleep and sometimes it becomes quite late or very early depending on how you look at it before I actually hit the pillow.
So if I was lucky enough to win this book, I guess that would mean more late/early nights. LOL
Thanks for all the contests you hold, giving us this wonderful opportunity.

I find peace by using my commuting time for prayer and praise...lots of singing going on in my car! I spend at least 12 1/2 hours each week in my car so I use it to slow down and enrich my relationship with the Lord. I am also finding peace within my household by letting go of material THINGS I don't need or use. Giving them to someone who could and would use them. Trying to do a CLEAN SWEEP in my house, (Except for my books and my quilting stash of course, lol)!!!

I have been teaching kindergarten in a inner city school for the past five years. It is so important for me to achieve inner peace in order to be the best teacher possible. Many times I take school or student issues with me home because I love what I do and I love my students. After a long day the way I unwind and achieve inner peace is by taking walks or by laying in bed and reading a book. This is time where I can take a break from everything that is going on in my life. By making time for "me" it allows me to focus on all the other tasks at hand.

When it hits, I immediately go into silent prayer, until I can get away. Then I go out into the garden, pull weeks, watch the wind through the trees, listen and watch the birds, prune dead leaves, branches, etc. off of what needs it and then water the potted patio plants. I go down to talk to Jake the donkey, scratch his ears, groom on him (which he likes so much he is known to grunt some) for a while, clean up manure, give him a snack or feed if it's time. I watch and listen, since we are out in the country. I learn much from watching wildlife of all kinds. Then I come in & cook supper, relate with husband & grown up children, grandchild, etc. as we eat together. I am biding my time until I can grab some more "me time." Then I slip off, open up God's Word, until I feel peace. Then I slip into a warm bath, in the dark, & as I soak there, I talk to God about everything bothering me that put me in this state. I keep in prayer, until whatever it is lifts, and then the peace comes, even if it is only in the eye of the storm, & there is more to come. I remember the lilies of the field, & I do not borrow trouble from tomorrow, but stand under His umbrella of peace that passes all understanding, being careful to stay just in this moment, as a little child would do, since we are to be like them. I will purpose myself to not look forward or behind, (which is a temptation), but to stay in His presence, in His place of peace for me, in that moment. Then I know it's time to get out of the tub, & I'll be able to sleep and abide wonderfully. It has taken great discipline to keep "blinkers on," as horses have to sometimes have, to not look anywhere, but straight up to Him. To go after Him, like the woman with the issue of blood, to touch the hem of His garment. I become like a terrier with a bone & I won't let go in that tub, until I have it from Him. I have learned to deal with constant pain on a fairly intense level. First I had to learn patience when not in peace or when in pain, so I could listen to Him, & listen to whomever was speaking to me, & reply lovingly. That was my first lesson, and little by little, the Lord has brought me along. It and many other things, are no longer difficult, but relished as Lord takes me up and over them. It is fun to look back later, after you've learned so much through the process, & be amazed knowing that you alone could have never done all of that which was required during such a time. I pray this will bring someone else along in his/her walk.

Addendum: Should have also explained, in that time in the tub of waiting on the Lord, while also talking everything out & off my chest, I get the thoughts of how I should handle the situation, what directions I should take in the matter ... what I should say or how to respond, etc. Then after I think that through, the peace, like a warm blanket, wraps around me & all is well. THAT'S when I get out of the tub!
