Fall Favorites

Spring and fall are my favorite seasons. It's no wonder. Few people like summer in Florida.

I used to like winter here but last year we had a record-breaking winter (10 straight days of the coldest temps we'd ever had) and I thought we'd never get warm. You see, our homes are not well-insulated for winter because it doesn't get very cold here. Each day I bundled up and also put sweaters on the Chihuahuas and gave them more little blankets to cuddle under. They made very quick trips outside for bathroom breaks, let me tell you!

On Saturday, while the Northeast experienced a freakish early storm, we had very cold, gray weather here that just felt like it was seeping into the bones. An extra blanket went on the bed -- one with a fake sheepskin lining that the Chis just loved.

I noticed on Facebook that people have been talking about making all their favorite fall foods and enjoying them. Someone took a photo of their little boy eating what I call an apple dumpling. She called it a sidewalk pie. Interesting, huh? The hot apple cider and hot chocolate sound so good and oh my, I could almost smell the crockpots of simmering soups. What great fall delights.

Now that the fall weather has arrived, I'm all ready to start making these goodies soon. I'm also thinking of what recipes I'll include in my current manuscript. I always like to ask readers what Amish recipes they'd like to see in one of my books. I'm hoping that you've read some of my books so you can suggest some new ones here...

Hannah Rollett is the winner of an autographed copy of A Time for Peace, my latest book out in the Quilts of Lancaster County series for Abingdon Press. Hannah, I'm e-mailing you for your mailing address.

Hope you have a great week!

Blessings,

Barbara

Fried Apple Pies would be a recipe I would like to see, and also the recipe for what the Amish call Meadow Tea. What is that anyway???

Have often wondered...would insulating for winter cold not also help insulating against summer"s heat? i don't care for cold either, and so Mom and i head to Arizona for winter. Now, of course, what they and we call cold are completely different so it might be in Florida, as well. Have a warmer winter.

Yes, it makes sense so apparently that's why it's not done...or, at least, it wasn't done back in the 80s when my house was built. What I don't understand is why we can't have cheap solar panels on our roofs here to run our a/c in Florida instead of paying big bucks for energy when we have so many sunny days.
