Games
I love games. When I was a kid I used to play them all the time--outdoor games, board games, card games, jacks, dominoes...if it was a game, I'd play it. This past Thanksgiving, thanks to my husband, I rediscovered my love for dominoes. He plays differently than I did with my family, but its just as fun.
For the past few years there has been a push for "family game time". This has been driven by the companies that manufacture the games, which makes sense. But playing games is a great way to interact with others. While online games are fun (I play my fair share) nothing beats the interaction and challenge of playing with other people, around a table, engaging in some friendly competition face to face. Now days the rules include putting your cell phones and ipods away!
Some of my favorite games to play as a child were Careers, Payday, Perfection, Jacks, and Trouble. I also liked Simon, although that's a game you can play by yourself, so that kind of detracts from my point. What are some of your favorite childhood games?
'Til next time,
Kathleen

I love to play games !! My family plays everytime we get together, especially for the holidays. We just played games at Thanksgiving. It is such a fun time and even in today's hustle and bustle we still enjoy them. I remember playing Careers and Canasta growing up and of course the famous Candyland. Now days it is Cranium and dominoes, yathzee and Uno to name a few.

I was just like you! If there was a game going, I'd be in it! Card games I played were 'Go fish', 'Last card', 'Check patience', 'Snap'.
We played 'Bingo'.
There was another game that I forget the name of. It was basically like mini billiards, and we played it on the dining room table.
I also remember playing 'Trouble' and 'Jacks', although we called Jacks, 'Knuckle bones'. Don't know why.
When it came to the outdoors, our imaginations meant that the sky was the limit. We would skate up and down the pavement outside and perfect our jumps and stunts etc. The show was only for ourselves, but it didn't matter. We had fun. The stunts didn't just stop with our roller skating skills. Our bicycles used to get a fair workout too. We'd set up obstacle courses in the backyard, and we'd do jumps and stunts on those too. Nobody ever got hurt, although one day I did come home with 15 holes in one of my tyres. I thought I only had one. My poor dad got the job of fixing it for me on his day off when I was at school the next day. They were such good times.
Oh! And the games of Bullrush! It's another version of tag. Hmm, the names are a lot different in New Zealand from the States, aren't they?
I used to love 'Hopscotch' too, and 'Four square'. Bouncing a ball into somebody's square and trying to get them unawares so that you could get them 'out'.
Something you don't have in the US that I grew up with because of my culture is playing with the poi. They are firm balls attached to long strings and they are used by twirling them and other things. What I most enjoyed was their stick games. You would sit in groups of 2 or 4 and there would be a set method of what went on. Ihe sticks would be used in conjuction of a song. It would require you to flip your sticks, then pass them, (throw them), between yourself and your partner(s) and keep it going. Hard to explain, and I'm not good at links to show you. Just look up 'Maori poi' or 'Maori sticks' on Google. It will give you some sites to look at, so you can get a better idea of what I'm talking about.
I also pretended that I was a gym coach. I'd have a lot of younger girls who would come to me and I would help them with their walkovers, backflips, somersaults etc. I loved to play, and it didn't really matter to me what we played, just what we played and when.

I agree!! Every Saturday night we have a game night. 6 of my cousins, my daughter, husband & I get together & play canasta or trains (domino version). We have so much fun & are becoming close again. Now that we are the elders of the family, seems more & more that everyone drifts apart. I would love it if all of us who are local, we have a huge family, could get into doing this! We are losing our family times to games, tv, etc.

I loved to play games as a child and with my children as they were growing up. Chinese checkers and aggervation were my favorites. Alot of the games we played were merely invented by our imaginations. Oh, the joy of being a child...no matter how old we are!

Our family enjoys playing dominoes too. We play Bingo at our family reunion with white elephant gifts as prizes. I remember playing checkers, Gumby and Pokey, Go to the Head of the Class, Trivial Pursuit, Monopoly and many others. It's fun and good family time together.
