Amish are using washing machines and 'spinners'
Happy Monday Everyone!
Barbie, my friend in Lancaster County who used to be Amish, told me a story recently. She said that lots of the Amish folks were purchasing washing machines, running them with diesel, and only using the 'Spin' cycle. Barbie said that the clothes are so wet from the wringer machines that drying is difficult when it's freezing outside--when you have to hang the clothes around the house to dry. So, they are using regular washing machines--but only the 'Spin' cycle. "They think using the other cycles would be to luxurious," Barbie said.
Then my fabulous assistant, Janet, found this article that explains. Apparently, they are also buying the 'Spinner' washing machines for this purpose.

So, what do you think? Is this a 'gray area'? The bishop seems to approve...
Hope you all have a blessed week!

Hey! I know Barbie!
Those women work so hard as it is! I'd say that if they want a washing machine to give them a little more time for all of the hundreds of other things they have to do, then more power to them!!

I guess it all depends on what a bishop approves of. Then again...he doesn't have to do the wash. The spinner sounds like a good idea. Is it run by a generator? or some other excuse for not having elec. The propane used seems to be such a danger. It is interesting to me how all this came to be...why stop at a certain point in time to be Plain. Why not go back to the time of Christ? No batteries or generators...just wood cooking and no fridges. When I read the stories it interests me that they can't have cars but can get rides from English who do and can take the train. They can take advantage of ER & other medical advances too. It's a strange mix of old and modern. I especially like hearing about the farming equipment that they can and cannot use. But...I respect their plain life in many areas, especially not having phones and their family life. Yet,why don't they use walky talky's for emergencies? They just use batteries. When our elec goes out here (if it's not for too long)I like the quiet and the fact that neighbors will actually talk outside then. There's no way to stop it, but noise pollution is a real problem. My family on my mom's side came from Germany before WW1 and settled in Indiana or Illinois. Grandma used to use the same terms in German that the Amish use. I've kinda wondered if some were Amish. She was the oldest of 12.
One last thing. I've asked before...do the Amish use a plastic covering on the diapers like I used to with my kids in the 60s? M.A.

I do remember how wringer washer and put rubber diapers through that wringer diapers and explodes, and garments sometimes get stuck going around and around and around those wringers. I remember having to disassemble the whole wringer head to get something untangled. and I ruined a couple of shirts
Did you ever get anything caught in a wringer?or ruined a couple of shirts? Thanks for the reminders .
